L'Arc〜En〜Ciel are one of J-rock’s great success stories, a phenomenal foursome topping the Oricon chart with multiple releases since the late ‘90s. The restless alt-rockers even managed to take the top two spots with albums Ark and Ray respectively, released simultaneously in the summer of 1999. Constantly cultivating their sound, they alternate post-punk, gothic rock, J-pop, jangly guitars, dreamy synths and skyward strings, while they're also known for releasing different versions of their tracks — without vocals or drums— creatively exploring the alt-rock idiom even within the same song.
