Harry Nilsson: The Songwriters

Harry Nilsson’s catalogue—whimsical, wild and devastating—is a treasure trove of pop songwriting. Many are familiar with his straightforward, heartsick “One”, which was made famous by Three Dog Night’s simultaneously intense and plaintive version. But he was a master of psychedelia (the Beatles-esque “1941”), theatrical numbers (Shelley Duvall’s “He’s Large”, from the 1980 film Popeye) and even the unabashedly goofy (the zany “Coconut”).
