Girlpool Essentials

The major throughline in the career of Girlpool—the duo of Avery Tucker and Harmony Tividad—was the insatiable urge to evolve. Even as they moved away from their lo-fi roots, Tucker and Tividad retained their bold vocal approach; their voices moved and cracked together, richly emotive and darkly humorous. Their sound was a product of the Los Angeles DIY scene, where they had met in their late teens. They released their career-defining debut LP, Before the World Was Big, in 2015, marking their proper introduction to the indie music world. On future albums—including 2019’s sonically adventurous What Chaos Is Imaginary and 2022’s swan song, Forgiveness—Girlpool touched on a wide variety of styles: sludgy indie rock (“Lucy’s”), glitchy electronic (“Lie Love Lullaby”) and Americana (“Hire”), all through a glossier production lens. Tucker and Tividad went on hiatus in the summer of 2022.
