The British soul-rock band Fine Young Cannibals had their star turn in the late ’80s with a pair of international hits: “She Drives Me Crazy” and “Good Thing” charted around the world and reached No. 1 in the US. • The band formed in 1984 when bassist David Steele and guitarist Andy Cox—both formerly of ska stalwarts The Beat—joined with singer Roland Gift, late of the ska band The Akrylykz. • They released their self-titled debut as Fine Young Cannibals in 1985 and had a pair of No. 8 UK hits with “Johnny Comes Home” and a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”. • Fine Young Cannibals returned to the UK Top 10 in 1987 with “Ever Fallen in Love,” a Buzzcocks song they covered for the soundtrack to the 1986 action comedy movie Something Wild. • The trio’s second and final studio album, 1989’s The Raw & the Cooked, made the Top 10 in numerous countries and hit No. 1 in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The album included “She Drives Me Crazy” and “Good Thing”, the band’s biggest hits. • Fine Young Cannibals won a pair of Brit Awards in 1990: Best British Group and Best British Album for The Raw & the Cooked. • The group split up in 1992, though they briefly reconvened in 1996 to record the single “The Flame”, which peaked at No. 17 in the UK. In the 2000s, Gift resurrected the name on his own to tour as Roland Gift and The Fine Young Cannibals.
