Zakkum: Essentials

Zakkum: Essentials

Formed as a cover band in the late ’90s, Zakkum gradually began releasing original songs and developing their own identity—infusing their affection for alt-rock with traditional Turkish instruments, and pursuing glam rock theatricality. “Hatıran Yeter” exemplifies these entwined styles, with a darting baglama buttressed by a classical guitar riff and chant-along chorus. “24 Ayar” is more conventional alt-rock, with driving guitars and vocalist Yusuf Demirkol’s haunted croon, while “Ahtapotlar” sounds ripped straight from a ’90s teen movie, with its angsty pop punk urgency.
