There are a whole lot of sides to vocalist/producer/DJ Jessy Lanza’s game-changing work as an electronic musician. But the two she most frequently toggles between are the techno, electro-funk and footwork of her recent DJ-Kicks and the ’80s/’90s funk, R&B, soul, boogie and new jack swing that have inspired so many of her original productions. On her Selects playlist, she favours the latter, more nostalgic sound. “These are songs I listen to in the car while driving around Silicon Valley,” the California-via-Hamilton, Ontario, transplant tells Apple Music. “I wanted to license a lot of these songs for my DJ-Kicks, but learned that a lot of R&B is kept under lock and key by major labels. Luckily I could compile the tracks here.” While there’s plenty of vintage synth-funk and soul from the likes of Al B. Sure!, Orlando Johnson & Trance, and Al Etto, sometimes her inclusions are just knowing looks back to that era, with retro-sounding tracks from Charlie Wilson and Brian Ellis.
