Lungfish Essentials

Maryland post-hardcore band Lungfish were one of the gutsiest groups in the experimental rock underground. Formed in '87, their music often focused on hypnotic riffs and frontman Daniel Higgs' chanted vocals. Yet their sound often took manic leaps in style, inspired as much by disparate bands like Black Sabbath and Joy Division as it was Celtic folk, dub reggae and religious hymns. After releasing 10 albums on the mighty Dischord label between 1992 and 2005, the cult band went on hiatus. But their reputation had spread, in part due to the experimental solo folk albums Higgs released in the '00s.
