Born in Siberia but a German resident since the late '80s, Helene Fischer gravitates toward schlager's more country side. That is to say: full-throated heartache tunes that melodically recall both Olivia Newton-John's early countrypolitan period and ABBA's disco-tinged ballads, occasionally with Celtic touches. Though she covers English-language hits live, she mainly sings in German about villas in paradise and being breathless through the night, but also of madness and facing the morning after. And we love her for it.
