Gepe Essentials

Since the mid-2000s, Chilean singer/songwriter Gepe has merged the politically charged '60s and '70s Latin American folk music of artists like Victor Jara and Silvio Rodríguez with contemporary indie, shoegaze and synth-pop influences. His light and brittle electronic arrangements are bolstered by a frequent undercurrent of Latin percussion and reggae basslines, while his delivery in songs like “En la Naturaleza (4-3-2-1-0)” suggests Beck-style rapping. Occasional vocal counterpoints from women like Javiera Mena, Wendy Sulca and Carla Morrison only makes Gepe's sound more hypnotic.
