L.A. electronic musician/producer Flying Lotus weds the freedom of jazz improvisation with the noise-for-noise's-sake impact of hip-hop. On "Kill Your Co-Workers", his uptempo instrumental laces drum 'n' bass momentum with video game blips-and-beeps and a sizzling cymbal sound, before breaking into a multitude of synth effects. On "Satelllliiiiiiiteee", tactile percussive sensations and relaxed harmonies create the impression of an insect invasion—albeit a very chill one. "Brainfeeder" offers a soothing wash of overlapping textures singed with static. Analogue or digital, FlyLo explores sound as possibility.
