About The Fusion Project

Formed in Oxford via Mumbai, The Fusion Project blend a thrilling clash of Eastern and Western sonic styles. • The group started out in the humble surroundings of a student flat at Oxford University as the brainchild of Rushil Ranjan. • Born in Mumbai and raised in Cyprus, Ranjan was well-travelled by the time he arrived in Britain to study law. Isolated from Indian music, he delved into blues, playing the saxophone and releasing a soft-rock album, 2013’s Oscillations. • The Fusion Project was born in winter 2013 when Ranjan began jamming with flautist and fellow student Praveen Prathapan. They merged Western chord sequences with classical Indian swaras. • The Fusion Project has since grown from a duo to an eight-piece guided by the stylistic dexterity and exploratory tendencies of Ranjan and Prathapan. • They take a Western palette of cello, bass, guitar and clarinet and meld it with Indian flute and tabla. Meanwhile, they weave rich stories in both English and traditional Hindustani and Carnatic styles. • The band performs around the world, with hundreds of shows under their collective belt. They’ve collaborated with legends such as Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
