About Captain Soul

Named after a song from the Byrds' Fifth Dimension, Captain Soul was made up of bassist/vocalist Neil Barrow, drummer/vocalist John Garner, vocalist/guitarist Adam Howorth, and guitarist Martin Welsh. Under a previous incarnation and working name (Hooverdam), the were held captive for three years on Sire without any recordings seeing the light of day. Rebirthed as Captain Soul in 2000, Alan McGee signed the band to his Poptones label. Debuting with the T-Shirt 69 single that same year, the band began to generate positive comparisons to the Zombies, Flying Burrito Brothers, Hollies, Big Star, and Nirvana. The band also enjoyed constant exposure by frequently playing at McGee's Radio 4 events in Notting Hill. In March of 2001, the band released their acclaimed debut full-length, Beat Your Crazy Head Against the Sky. Another single followed a month later. The Beach Boys' Bruce Johnston and legendary producer Terry Melcher were so impressed with the band's early releases that they offered to record the band's second studio album, free of charge. ~ Andy Kellman
