Released during the COVID-19 outbreak, South Korean pianist/composer Yiruma’s bittersweet, five-track EP is a timely meditation on solitude. He finds inspiration and comfort in the familiar, from birdsong outside his window (“Sunset Bird”) to the title track’s reflection on sitting alone during a bright spring day. Lockdown has presented the world with time for nostalgia, too—and Yiruma shares his own touching memory of his commute to music college in London (“Berrylands Rd.”), while “Yellow Room” conjures recollections of childhood. Yiruma’s melodies are pure Chopin-inspired magic, each one carried aloft by gorgeous, jazz-inflected harmonies.
