PLAY

RL Grime is a celebrated DJ, remixer and party starter, but those titles tend to overshadow his work as a songwriter and composer, where he blends trap, drill, EDM, sample-based house and more into a sound both indebted to the history of dance music and hell-bent on destroying it. PLAY, his third LP, continues to work that formula by nodding to the places he’s been while looking into the future. “Ultrawide” opens things with a record scratch that settles onto the right groove, as if to signify that the gear in Grime’s studio is itching to begin blaring deliriously fun electro-pop. Its 4/4 kick, piercing snares, jangling chains and skittering synths that would fit on any number of chart-topping rap hits are a perfect encapsulation of what Grime does so well: blending together a number of recognisable dance styles into something that’s easy to digest but impossible to replicate. “Pour Your Heart Out”, which features 070 Shake, shows off a new side of Grime. He steps back from the spotlight in favour of the singer, offering an epic backdrop for her to lead the festival-ready anthem. It’s proof that while RL Grime has been helping parties reach their peak and soundtracking legendary moments for over a decade, on PLAY, he is the show.
