Early Hours (DJ Mix)

Early Hours can mean a few different things: Are you winding down after being up all night, or are you just rising to meet the sun? Often the artists helming our Early Hours DJ mix series cater to both frames of mind, but for Toronto DJ/producer Ciel’s edition, the vibes are fresh-faced and clear-eyed. “This is a mix to start out your day,” she tells Apple Music. “There are some wiggly, psychedelic moments, but I took my time bringing them in for listeners who have just woken up. They want to hear music that gets their day going but isn’t super banging.” The tunes here span an impressive array of moods and styles. “I think DJs truly use the full extent of their skills when they're trying to combine things that don't necessarily ‘fit’ easily,” she says. “With chill mixes, there are loads of genres at your disposal—ambient, dub, downtempo, trip-hop, IDM, illbient, big beat, R&B, psychedelia, electronica, soul, even jazz… This mix features a handful of songs I've played in my warm-up sets over the last year or two, plus a bunch of new discoveries and unreleased gems from my friends in Canada.” The latter includes “Lil Mood” by Montreal DJ Lis Dalton, an “oddball, psychedelic and dreamy track” that made Ciel’s jaw drop the first time she heard it, she says: “This is exactly the kind of trip-hop I like, where the beats sound like they're almost falling apart, melting into each other. Such a big vibe.”
