Collide

Collide

On his five-songs EP Collide, Andy Hunter manages to compress and distill an array of sonic ideas found on his previous releases. Fans of this veteran electronic auteur will find these tracks infused with the same futuristic grandeur and sly humor that have characterized his work from his stints as an innovative British DJ in the early ‘90s onwards. Hunter is masterful at releasing spectrums of sound from interplays of synthesized textures, conjuring up visions of intergalactic vistas and echoes of ‘80s techno beats, sometimes simultaneously. His Christian beliefs also inform his work, most noticeably here in the yearning pulsations of “Dawn Vision” and the accelerating drive of the title tune. Freely combining sonic genres, Hunter overlays ambient New Age ripples upon relentlessly rushing beats in “Rainbow Sunshine” and matches an austere club groove with giddy Cars-like synth burbles in “Annihilate.” Hovering over it all is Hunter’s theme of a higher unity amidst the competing claims of heaven and earth. Collide is at once an intergalactic dance party and a personal expression of deeply-held faith.
