Featuring but a single founding band member, lead singer/songwriter Dave Pirner, Change of Fortune represents a new chapter in Soul Asylum’s history. While a good deal of the album comes rooted in their ragged brand of alt-rock, it also boasts several cuts that boldly step beyond it. “Can’t Help It” is a snotty tantrum of a song that recalls their early years. “When I See You,” in contrast, is crisp power pop featuring spacey synthesizers. Then there’s the novel title track, on which the band fold those synths into Prince-inspired funk.
