Amar Singh Chamkila Essentials

Between 1981 and 1988, Amar Singh Chamkila became one of the most prolific, polarising and beloved stars of Punjabi music both in India and beyond. The vocalist and musician—who was gunned down alongside his singing partner Amarjot in Mehsampur—was fearless in his rawly honest lyrics and rousing live open-air concerts. The “Elvis of Punjab”, as he’s been dubbed by composer Amit Trivedi, forever transformed Punjabi folk with captivating melodies, balladry steeped in wordplay and controversial songs that touched upon taboo issues.
