About Michael Nesmith

The most musically accomplished member of the Monkees, Michael Nesmith also had the most interesting solo career among his bandmates. A respected guitarist and songwriter, Nesmith was the first Monkee to play on their recordings, and penned memorable tunes like "You Just May Be the One," "Circle Sky," and "Listen to the Band." He was the first to cut a solo album, 1968's The Wichita Train Whistle Sings, and his early-'70s solo efforts (including Magnetic South, Loose Salute, and Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash) grafted rock & roll energy to authentic C&W sounds. He later created a multi-media concept album, 1974's The Prison, explored updated pop on 1977's From a Radio Engine to the Photon Wing and 1979's Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma, and was the first artist to win a Music Video Grammy for 1981's Elephant Parts, blending music clips with comedy sketches.
