We're All Fruit Salad!: The Wiggles' Greatest Hits

The Wiggles feel like they’ve always been a household name around the world, but it’s a success that’s been hard-won through countless TV appearances, live performances, mixed-media releases and over 1400 songs ever since they formed in Sydney in 1991. Somewhat amazingly, this exhaustive collection of 40 tracks spanning 30 years of tireless activity manages to tell a complete story. Adapted from the video special of the same name, We’re All Fruit Salad!, charmingly, takes its title at large from its equally charming lead single—which happily likens the differences between people to the myriad fruits that make up a “yummy yummy” fruit salad. The Wiggles’ good-natured inclusivity underpins the simple joy of each track, and extends to We’re All Fruit Salads!’s own timeline too: The first third highlights the work of founding members Phillip Wilcher, Murray Cook, Greg Page, Jeff Fatt and Anthony Field (the only remaining original Wiggle), introduced by the first song they ever wrote (“Get Ready To Wiggle”) and crowned by perennial favourite “Hot Potato”. The rest of the compilation charts the group’s “New Wiggles” era when the addition of Emma Watkins, Lachlan Gillespie and Simon Pryce ushered in fresher, funkier sensibilities—starting with the curiously indefatigable “Wake Up Lachy!” and concluding on the 40th and final track: a rendition of “We’re All Fruit Salad!” that includes so many diverse guest musicians it borders on world music.
