Paquito D'Rivera: Next Steps

A former member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, this jazz saxophonist brings a classical flavour to much of what he plays. "Contradanza", a sensational 2007 clarinet-piano duet with Alon Yavnai, echoes an early-20th-century style. D'Rivera wrote the poetic, clave-driven "Tembandumba" for the Young People's Chorus of New York City. And the tango-jazz fusion of "Viejo Smocking" generates an old-world swagger.
