War’s old-school funk has been mined by plenty of hip-hop’s most beloved artists—2Pac, Beastie Boys and De La Soul among them. But rappers are far from the only musicians nodding to the band. Country star Thomas Rhett built his 2016 hit “Vacation” around the Latin-inspired “Low Rider”, one of War’s most sampled hits, while trip-hop greats Portishead’s throbbing “Wandering Star” houses a sublime harmonica break from the deep cut “Magic Mountain”.
