The Māori language flourishes across any and all musical genres, as highlighted by a New Zealand initiative launched in 2021 to celebrate new waiata (Māori songs) sung in te reo Māori. Following on from the 2019 compilation of the same name, which featured alt-pop star BENEE and soul group SIX60, this playlist features new music from up-and-coming artists alongside fresh versions of classic songs. Singer-songwriter Hollie Smith contributes a showstopping version of Don McGlashan’s “Kōrukutia / Bathe in the River”, complete with a backing choir that includes the original songwriter. There’s reggae from Katchafire and hip-hop from Tipene, while thrash metal band Alien Weaponry pay epic tribute to the Māori god of the ocean on “Tangaroa”. And Huia’s dancehall-inspired track “Marama La Luna (Moon Moon)” takes inspiration from observing a blood moon eclipse, with lyrics sung in four different languages.
