It’s easy to see why Violette Wautier’s “Smoke” struck an immediate chord upon its 2018 release. The song’s pristine, cinematic soundscape served as the perfect reintroduction to a singer-songwriter who first emerged on the 2013 edition of The Voice Thailand. She writes and performs in English—impressive given that it’s her her third language after Thai and French—and her expanding repertoire includes the beat-driven “Brassac” and the minimal “Goodbye”, all of which showcase her slinky and elegant vocal style to maximum effect.
