Since forming in Chicago in 2004, Veil of Maya have never shied away from evolution. Their early, deathcore-influenced records paired guttural vocals with pile-driving guitars and occasional technical metal flourishes. Veil of Maya’s sound veered deeper into metalcore territory after vocalist Lukas Magyar joined in 2014, as his keening, urgent, melodic voice pierced the shuddering riffs and deep growls of songs such as “Mikasa” and “Overthrow”. In recent times, the group has evolved once again, pairing prog-tinged atmospherics and rhythmic complexity with their gruff metal on “Outsider”.
