Todd Edwards Essentials

New Jersey producer Todd Edwards is a living symbol of the way dance music hops borders. Daft Punk cited him as an influence on 1997’s “Teachers”; UK clubbers know him as “The God”. Born in 1972, Edwards began producing house music in the early-‘90s heyday of Newark’s Zanzibar club and eventually fashioned his unique style out of cut-up vocal samples and unusually wriggly, swinging rhythms. His tracks became hits among UK DJs, who found in them the blueprint for what would become UK garage. And while he remained obscure in America, Daft Punk recruited him to sing “Face to Face” on its second LP, 2001’s Discovery, and brought him back for “Fragments of Time”, a nostalgic highlight on 2013’s Random Access Memories. He was gratified that the duo wanted such a heartfelt song. “I’m a very genuine writer," he told Apple Music. "I like writing songs that actually mean something.”
