This New Zealand outfit—which has been through 20 line-ups around Phillipps—is adept at evoking melancholic grandeur and intense emotion through fuzzy indie-pop. The title of “Heavenly Pop Hit” from 1990 seems like a case of typical Kiwi irony until you get swept up by the psych-pop feel and buoyant melody.
