The Auteurs Essentials

Inveterate indie rock troublemaker Luke Haines may have shared similar '60s rock influences with his contemporaries, but The Auteurs frontman refused to join the Britpop party in the ‘90s. Instead, from 1991 to the band's 1999 breakup, Haines delivered a run of antagonistic, literate songs. Working with noise rock icon—and fellow curmudgeon—Steve Albini on 1996's After Murder Park gave their music even more of an irritant's edge, and 1999's How I Learned to Love the Bootboys was an obnoxious swan song. Following The Auteurs' demise, Haines went on to form Black Box Recorder.
