Shihad Essentials

It took a catastrophe of Earth-shattering proportions to interrupt Shihad's trajectory to world conquest in 2001. The devastating hard rock outfit was formed in New Zealand by AC/DC worshippers Tom Larkin and Jon Toogood in '88, and four intense albums had brought them to double-Platinum industrial potency with The General Electric in '99. They were touring the US when the 9/11 tragedy cast a dim light on their name—a misspelling of "jihad" from the sci-fi novel, Dune—and a temporary change to Pacifier stalled momentum in '02. The experience fuelled an already simmering political subtext from Love Is the New Hate to album nine, FVEY, which scaled a new peak of shrewdly targeted rage in 2014.
