Samuel Hui Essentials

Without 'Ah Sam', Samuel Hui, Cantopop wouldn't be. The first megastar in '70s Hong Kong, he was loved by fans of both western pop and traditional Chinese music––marrying guitar-drum rock 'n' roll with a half-spoken, half-sung intonation of Cantonese opera. A sharp social commentator, his songs speak to the common people, with lyrics in grass root Cantonese slang about making a living and surviving the rat race in capitalist, colonial Hong Kong. With his brothers Michael and Ricky, the Hui brothers have preserved an important chapter of Hong Kong's social history through their films and music.
