Roky Erickson Essentials

Roky Erickson was the patron saint of psychedelia, garage punk and alt-rock. As cofounder of The 13th Floor Elevators, the eccentric visionary first penned '60s nuggets like “You're Gonna Miss Me”, in which his ungodly shrieks and esoterica come soaked in brain-liquefying reverb. On his late-'70s recordings—hear the wiry “Two Headed Dog (Red Temple Prayer)”—he shifted to crunchy outsider rock that dives into horror surrealism. Erickson also had a genius for ballads stripped down to their naked honesty: 2010's powerful “Goodbye Sweet Dreams” is a wall-of-sound meditation on melancholy and psychological unease.
