This Brisbane-born three-piece of pop-loving agitators seemed to do everything necessary to ensure they'd never rise from the dankness of the underground into the bright light of the mainstream. Formed at the height of the post-grunge creative vacuum of the mid-'90s and driven by the art house leanings of Quan Yeomans, the trio never limited itself by genre, leaping from foul-mouthed noise-punk one moment, to hardcore hip-hop or synth-dance or pure pop the next, all delivered with double-edged lyrics and big grins on their faces. The band's first four albums all peaked high in the national Top 10. 1997's classic Unit won the band ARIA Awards both for best mainstream album and best alternative album, which just about says it all.
