Professor Green is British hip-hop’s clown prince with a dark heart. At his most lively—as on his run of early hits from 2010—he’s an easily tempted mischief maker, a weasel-voiced lover-and-leaver. But underneath the cockiness is a troubled conscience. Like Eminem, he skips between personas, mining his past for inspiration (also apparent in his successful move into making TV documentaries on social issues). He’s at his most powerful displaying his scars in public, whether he’s raging at his upbringing (“Read All About It”) or laying his relationship problems bare for all to see (“Photographs”).
