SIX60 Essentials

The only certainty with Dunedin five-piece SIX60 is that you never know quite what to expect from them musically. Since forming at university in 2008—their name is a reference to the address of their first rehearsal studio, 660 Castle Street—the band have become one of New Zealand’s biggest acts, mining a rich assortment of genres such as pop, indie, gospel, R&B, funk and alt-rock. “Please Don’t Go” features R&B harmonies over pop melodies and an Alan Lomax sample; “Never Enough” is a slice of earworm indie pop complete with horns and parping Hammond B3; “Don’t Go Changing” features mournful strings and gospel backing vocals over a stuttering beat, complete with vocalist Matiu Walters’ gentle falsetto; “Special” bounces along with a laidback Island vibe and big pop production. Thematically, the band veer from issues such as relationships (“Special”, “Please Don’t Go”) to striving to be the best one can be (“The Greatest”), all while concocting highly contagious melodies—a characteristic that, more than any genre, has defined them since day one.
