Unlike grunge-dominated Seattle, there wasn't one scene or style that defined Chicago alternative rock in the '90s. So while the city produced a handful of major alt-rock bands, Chicago was also home to the quirky pop-punk of Smoking Popes, the abrasive noise rock of The Jesus Lizard, the groundbreaking post-rock of Tortoise and other left-of-centre sounds from Chi-town originals.
