Mandopop group Nan Quan Mama is supposedly named after the mother of Taiwan superstar Jay Chou, a longtime friend. Since forming in the mid-2000s, their musical style (and membership), has been through a few different permutations—they've been an all-male four-piece rock band, a pop band with a female lead vocalist and a hip-hop-inspired duo. But they remain best known for their early ballads, featuring sentimental vocals and a steady backbeat, with occasional inspiration found in alt-rock or reggae.
