Naim Daniel taps into the pop Zeitgeist as well as Malaysia’s affinity with love ballads, leading to songs with subtlety and substance. “Adakah Engkau Menungguku”, which features a rap verse from Tuju, is a tropical-bass track made for a festival-going audience, while “Sembah” is a vintage ‘90s-styled Malay ballad complete with riffs by Man Keedal. His 2019 AJL-winning single “Sumpah” is not only lovelorn introspection but can also be read as a spiritual ode—its title simultaneously means “curse” and “promise”.
