Modest Mouse's dark, abrasive—and sometimes unhinged—indie rock is often best in its most unpredictable moments. These come often for the band, as on the twitchy, Pixies-esque pop of "A Different City" or the clunky, twangy chug of "All Night Diner". And just when you think they've taken a breather for a soft acoustic lament, they turn it into a wild hoedown ("Parting of the Sensory").
