Mike Oldfield's most acclaimed music is a product of his dogged, singular vision. He layers up instruments and creates ambitious longform musical movements across whole sides of vinyl, such as his epic prog-rock calling card Tubular Bells, which he originally released in 1973 but has revisited a few times since. He's no slouch as a pop songwriter either (“Moonlight Shadow” was a big hit single in 1983), crafting meticulous recordings that have inspired both new age composers and film producers, and his subsequent career took in orchestral works and even ambient techno.
