With a gorgeous, sweepingly ambitious self-titled debut, split into three volumes, MARO introduced herself as a prodigious talent journeying across emotionally uncharted spaces in jazzy, contemporary folk. The singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist branched out to hook-laden electronic pop, trap and beyond in 2022’s can you see me? and represented Portugal at Eurovision, finding wider recognition with the melancholy bilingual ballad “Saudade, Saudade”. Going back to basics, she embraced a beguiling acoustic sensibility the following year, crystallised in the aching hortelã.
