Madder Lake Essentials

Time is but a trifle in the prog-psychedelic vortex that Madder Lake calls home. Melbourne's most mercurial acid-blues journeymen returned with World in 2013—just 39 years after their previous release in the Sunbury haze of the early '70s. Give or take the 21st Century production sheen, the trippy-soulful thread was remarkably familiar from the vintage space-rock of Butterfly Farm, though it's the classic '72 debut, Stillpoint, for which the art school ensemble is best remembered. One of the first releases on the fledgling Mushroom Records label, its era-defining single 12lb Toothbrush is an eternal cornerstone of Australia's sunbaked rock'n'roll consciousness.
