Years before the catchphrase-stuffed catnip of “Thrift Store”, Macklemore paid his dues as an underground Seattle rapper with a promising debut and 2009's locally proud The Unplanned Mixtape. But when he formed a duo with producer Ryan Lewis and tapped a vast range of collaborators, he locked on to a genre-jumping, party-friendly sound that pervaded the pop mainstream with 2012's The Heist. Macklemore doubled down on that grab-bag approach for the dizzying single “Downtown” but populated 2016's album This Unruly Mess I've Made with a searing self-awareness that circled back around to his roots.
