Although currently based in Stockholm, Sweden, LUCIFER formed in Berlin in 2014 after vocalist Johanna Sadonis’ band The Oath broke up. This geographic shift—and the influence of drummer Nicke Andersson, who has played with death-metal icons Entombed and garage punks The Hellacopters—helps explain LUCIFER’s eclectic throwback sound. In fact, the band’s music feels cherry-picked from only the coolest bits of a ’70s record collection: Black Sabbath-esque heavy metal (the organ-heavy “California Son”), scuzzy melodic hard rock favoured by Alice Cooper (“Midnight Phantom”) and Heart’s propulsive FM radio hits (the harmony-driven “Izrael”).
