Loft Jazz: Early '70s New York

The ‘70s found the free jazz movement reaching its zenith. With roots dating back to the ‘50s, artists were uniting around the desire to break free of constraints—musically, socially and where major record labels were concerned. Underground and independent outlets like Impulse! Records were cropping up to provide a voice for these musicians, even as they continued playing in downtown lofts.
