While formulating his unique style in the mid '40s, blind pianist Lennie Tristano formed a soon-to-be-legendary sextet that included the likes of Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh and Sonny Dallas. Breaking from bebop orthodoxy, the band played a fundamental role in the development of modern jazz and free improvisation. In his solo work, the Chicago native became known for harmonically and rhythmically complex improvisations, as well as early experiments with tape and overdubbing. Tristano recorded only sporadically, but his prevailing influence speaks to the genius of his ideas.
