Kurt Rosenwinkel Essentials

Given this modern jazz guitarist's occasional recourse to distortion, it's easy to identify rock 'n' roll as an influence on the palette. But that's not the only stylistic well from which Rosenwinkel draws inspiration. His “standards trio” has provided robust-but-relaxing takes on jazz classics. And as a sideman working behind saxophonist, Mark Turner, he can find plenty to chew on during a performance of Wayne Shorter's “Nefertiti”. His own releases are where he truly cuts loose, though, placing his guitar-solo smarts alongside electronics, global textures, and Third Stream-style writing.
