Julianna Barwick Essentials

Julianna Barwick has said that her haunting, enveloping music was inspired in part by her days singing in a church choir while growing up in Missouri. Listening to her work, it's not hard to see the correlation, as she builds up her dense compositions using only her voice—looped, treated, and shape-shifted. Over time, Barwick's music has expanded to include piano and strings, but she still keeps her vocals at the core. Along the way, she's also found time to collaborate on projects with Ikue Mori and Helado Negro.
