Our Pachelbel journey inevitably begins with the German Baroque composer’s beautiful Canon and Gigue, forever etched into our collective consciousnesses. Principally, however, Johann Pachelbel was one of the organ world’s most influential figures, writing over 200 works for the instrument, and was revered by J.S. Bach for his development of the chorale prelude while organist in Erfurt, central Germany during the late 1670s and ’80s. Pachelbel was also a prolific vocal composer of considerable talent—here you’ll hear some of his 100-plus motets, arias, masses, Magnificats and more composed in Nuremberg, Eisenach and Erfurt.
