Henderson's solos were always admired, even well into the ‘80s with trio albums like The State of the Tenor / Live at the Village Vanguard gaining praise. But he was also skilled as a bandleader: In 1996, the Verve imprint got him to record with a large ensemble; the resulting album, Big Band, showed Henderson's taste in crisply progressive arrangements, particularly on originals like “Isotope”.
