Jem Cassar-Daley’s ‘A Day Off in December’ Playlist

Indie rock, country pop and trap comfortably co-exist on the summer-themed playlist curated by Jem Cassar-Daley, the Brisbane alt-pop newcomer who released her debut EP, I Don’t Know Who to Call, in 2022. The daughter of Australian country legend Troy Cassar-Daley, she alternates between tender guitar and piano balladry and tough country anthems. A similar variety cuts across her selections from Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy to Grimes and King Stingray. “When I have a day off in December, the first thing I like to do is call up my mates and head to the coast,” Cassar-Daley tells Apple Music. “7am alarm, sunscreen on, packed bag and we’re off. This playlist is for however you choose to spend your days off in the warmer months. It may be reading a book in the shade, getting outdoors or catching up with friends.” Read on for her insights into three very different standouts. Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett, “Over Everything” “This song never fails to put me in a good mood. It’s a particularly great driving song, so a good tune to put on when you’re heading to the coast or going on a road trip. It’s easy to listen to, the lyrics are great and it makes me very happy.” King Krule, “Ocean Bed” “I absolutely adore this song and the memories attached to it. I first discovered King Krule when I was in high school and making trips over to Stradbroke Island on the weekends and holidays. My friends and I would bring a speaker and snacks and sit at North Gorge for hours watching the clear waves roll in. Absolute bliss.” Playboi Carti, “New N3on” “This entire album was one of my favourites from 2022. It gets me in such a Friday mood and I love listening to this song when I’m getting ready to go out.”
